Top 10 Tips to Support Members’ Mental Health and Well-Being During Uncertainty

In challenging times, it’s important to prioritise our mental health and well-being. Here are ten practical tips for maintaining a positive mindset and supporting your well-being, especially during periods of uncertainty:

Practice Deep Breathing Exercises

Taking a few minutes each day to practice deep breathing can have a big impact on reducing stress. Try the 4-7-8 technique: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. This simple practice can calm your mind and help you regain focus when feeling overwhelmed.

Talk It Out

Sharing what you’re going through with someone you trust – whether a friend, family member, or fellow member -can be incredibly relieving. Sometimes, simply voicing your concerns can help you gain perspective and feel less isolated in your struggles.

Spend Time in Nature

Stepping outside and connecting with nature can be a powerful way to reduce stress and improve your mood. Whether it’s a walk in the park, up a munro, or even just a few minutes in your garden, fresh air and natural surroundings can do wonders for your mental clarity.

Connect with Fellow Members Who Understand

Networking with peers who share similar challenges can be a great source of support. Reach out to other members within the community who can relate to what you’re going through. Sharing experiences, advice, and encouragement can help you feel less alone.

Don’t Be Afraid to Seek Help

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Therapy, counselling, or even speaking to a mental health helpline can provide valuable support and tools to manage stress. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Establish a Routine

During uncertain times, maintaining a routine can provide a sense of control and stability. Set aside specific times for work, breaks, meals, and relaxation. Having a structured schedule can help you manage your time and energy more effectively.

Focus on What You Can Control

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when situations seem out of your hands. Focus on the aspects of your work and life that you can control, like your daily habits, your approach to challenges, and how you choose to react to situations. Letting go of what you can’t control can relieve a lot of stress.

Take Time for Self-Care

Prioritise activities that rejuvenate you, whether it’s reading a book, taking a warm bath, or engaging in a hobby. Even small acts of self-care can make a big difference in your overall well-being and help you recharge.

Stay Active

Physical activity is a proven mood booster. It doesn’t have to be a strenuous workout; even a short walk or stretching session can help release endorphins and improve your mood. Find an activity you enjoy and make it part of your routine.

Limit Exposure to Negative News

While it’s important to stay informed, constantly consuming negative news can heighten anxiety. Try to set boundaries for when and how you engage with the news, and balance it with uplifting or positive content. Protecting your mental space is key to maintaining resilience.
